If you want to try coast, the Gold Coast around Tamarindo and Flamingo offer the most popular Costa Rica fishing spots. There, sailfish can be caught throughout the entire year but for the best fishing, plan between May and August . Tuna are abundant here between August to October. Do not be surprised to find tuna schools of 40 to 60 pounders as well as groups with some fishing weighing 200 to 400 pounds. Between November and March, Papagayo Bay is a great place to catch roosterfish. They tend to like shorelines and are usually caught in around 60 feet of water. Good sized marlin, colorful dorado, and wahoo can also be caught here at different times of the year.
Billfish are a popular quarry for Costa Rica fishermen and ladies and the Central Pacific coast offers them in abundance. In the months when the water is warm, big marlin and sailfish are frequent visitors. Inshore, you will likely run into roosters, large snapper, wahoo, and amberjack. The Golfo Dulce is reported by many to offer the finest inland fishing in Costa Rica. This is mostly due to the fact that it contains many small coves and is very rocky, giving fish a great place to hide.
