Camping at Bahia Honda in the Florida Keys

Bahia Honda State Park has something quite unusual for the Florida Keys. It’s got a beach. And a truely beautiful one as well. Add to it nice camping sites and you have got the formula for a Florida Keys camping wonderland. Let’s find out why.

Although the Florida Keys are islands in the sun, natural beaches are quite exceptional indeed. Why? Largely since the waters surrounding the Florida Keys are so tranquil, the beach doesn’t get a chance to build up. Bahia Honda has, hands down, the best beach in the Florida Keys, and possibly the best in the Sunshine State.

Swimming is a popular activity at Bahia Honda State Park. The calm turquoise seas are warm, in the upper seventies to the low eighties nearly all of the year. And the waters are quite clear. Although the beach looks out to the Atlantic Ocean, unless there’s a storm out in the ocean, the waters are tranquil.

Together with swimming, snorkeling is quite a large draw to Bahia Honda. The same calm, clear turquoise waters which invite swimming are superb for exploring the underwater world. Plus, if you really want a delight, book a snorkeling tour from the park out to Looe Key to visit the amazing coral reef there.

Kayaking, canoeing and boating are always on the list of enjoyable things at the park. There’s a small marina plus a ramp for boats. If you’ve somehow misplaced your boat, you are able to rent a kayak from the park’s concession stand. The calm waters are great for exploring the waterways around the key, particularly on the Gulf side.

Let’s not forget Florida Keys camping. From tents to RVs to renting one of their beach cabins, all sorts of camping are available at the park. Here’s a warning: phone ahead to reserve a camping spot or particularly one of the air-conditioned cabins. As you might imagine, a beach cottage in this Florida paradise has a bit of a waiting list.

Bahia Honda State Park is located in the lower Florida Keys, a bit south and west of the Seven Mile Bridge. Just one stop here and you’ll very likely realize why they call the Florida Keys the American Caribbean. Or just call it Paradise.

So come on and visit. The weather lovely and the natives are welcoming. And once you are here, you will have to agree that it’s paradise found at Bahia Honda State Park in the lower Florida Keys.
